She added, as she had umpteen times before, that TV advertisers seemed to think that women should have an orgasm every time they used a vacuum cleaner—a formulation that she would repeat elsewhere by referencing floor wax or dishwashing soap. (Friedan had first introduced the notion of what we might call the “floorgasm” ten years earlier in the opening pages of The Feminine Mystique.14) Confusing? You bet. A transcript was produced of every Firing Line episode, available to viewers for a modest fee (a nice way to revisit a show that was virtually never repeated, in pre-VHS days), and one imagines a very frustrated stenographer pulling out her hair as she toiled over the 1971 Friedan episode. What kind of punctuation could possibly tame Friedan’s “you know” mantra?

At one point, in debating abortion with Buckley, she seems to feel like she’s got a real trump card.

FRIEDAN: The reverence for life I share, and the reverence for this Jewish thing, you know, called humanity and, you know, the whole evolution of it. But you know—I think—you know, supposing that a uterus was implanted in you, and therefore you had to consider this in terms of an issue that was real for you, not just an abstract issue for someone else. I doubt that suddenly you would—you know, just as surely you don’t consider yourself less important than all the sperm that might fertilize eggs that don’t fertilize eggs, so you couldn’t consider yourself as a person, you know, less important than an unborn fetus; you know.
